What does "life behind bars" mean? Ironically, it means freedom!
It means meeting up with the club on a cool morning, the sun just above the horizon. Early morning mist on the fields and a quiet crispness in the air. A couple dozen of your friends and a few new people in the parking lot. Everyone unloading their bikes and getting ready to roll.
Checking tire pressure. Applying sunblock. Helmet, sunglasses, gloves, shoes, water. Lights and computer on. Ready!
Gather up! A quick update on the route from the ride leader and a safety reminder. Then it's foot on pedal. Making your escape!
A nice easy pace at first. Muscles warming up. Group staying together. Nice chatty speed.
Stepping it up to a slightly faster pace. Then it's five, ten, fifteen miles down. Taking turns pulling the paceline. Going strong!
Sun rising... getting warmer! Less conversation now. Everybody working. Just the steady hum of rubber on pavement and spinning drive trains.
20 miles. 30 miles. Maybe a stop for a quick bite and top off the water. No time for a tea party!
Coming up on the wall! Downshifted into granny gear. Standing up and using arms to really apply torque. Slow burn all the way up. Summit reached! Accelerate down the other side.
50 miles. 60 miles. Getting hot. Water getting low.
Finally coasting back into the parking lot under a blazing sun. Tired, but feeling good!
Metric century done!
